A Church Built From Its Own Ruins

After being destroyed by bombs in 1945, this iconic church lay as a giant pile of rubble for decades. During its later reconstruction, engineers carefully salvaged thousands of original stones and placed them back into the new walls.

The ruins were left as a memorial until the reunification of Germany finally sparked a massive restoration project. Builders used advanced computer modeling to piece together the blackened original stones like a giant 3D puzzle. Because the old stones are darker than the new ones, the exterior serves as a striking mosaic of history. It stands today not just as a religious center, but as a powerful symbol of reconciliation.
