The Mosque That Is Actually Not Blue

The famous Blue Mosque in Istanbul is not actually blue. Its nickname comes from the thousands of handmade turquoise tiles inside, but the exterior of the building is entirely traditional grey stone.

Visitors often arrive expecting a bright blue facade, but the building showcases the classic neutral tones of Ottoman architecture. The magical blue glow only appears once you step inside the massive prayer hall. These thousands of intricate Iznik tiles feature floral patterns that create a stunning, shimmering effect under the natural light. It remains one of the few historical mosques to feature six minarets, which caused quite a controversy during its construction.
