A Masterpiece Built To Self-Destruct

In 1960, artist Jean Tinguely created a massive, chaotic machine specifically designed to destroy itself in front of an audience. The sculpture was a glorious, clanking spectacle that ended in a planned, fiery collapse.

Staged at the Museum of Modern Art, the machine was constructed from scraps like bicycle wheels and motors to create a symphony of mechanical failure. It performed for twenty-seven minutes, rattling and sparking until the fire department had to intervene to extinguish the wreckage. This performance challenged the idea that art must be permanent or static. It turned the very act of breaking down into a celebrated work of high art.
