Flamingos Are Not Born Pink

Flamingos are naturally born with dull gray or white feathers. They only turn their iconic shade of pink because of the high concentration of pigments found in the tiny brine shrimp and algae they consume.

If a flamingo does not eat a diet rich in these natural dyes, its bright color will gradually fade away. This process is similar to how eating many carrots can slightly change a human's skin tone. These birds gain their vibrant appearance as they mature and build up pigment deposits in their growing feathers. It is truly a striking example of how an animal's environment and diet directly reshape its physical appearance.
