Ants That Kidnap Their Own Workforce

Certain slave-making ants do not perform any domestic labor themselves. Instead, they raid neighboring nests to steal larvae, forcing the captive ants to raise the colony offspring as if they were their own.

These ants have evolved to become entirely dependent on their captives for survival. The parasite ants spend their energy exclusively on conducting raids rather than foraging for food or maintaining the nest. Because the kidnapped ants were raised in the colony from larvae, they simply perceive the parasites as their own family. It is a ruthless but highly effective biological strategy that completely outsources the work of running a society.
