The Anti-Pleasure Origins of Cereal
Modern breakfast cereal was originally invented as a bland health food to curb sinful urges. Its creators believed that sugary, spicy, or flavored foods provoked immoral behavior.
During the late 19th century, dietary reformers created dry, tasteless flakes designed to promote a boring lifestyle. They thought a simple diet could suppress the appetites of the general public. Over time, manufacturers began adding sugar and branding to make the product more palatable. It is quite ironic that a food meant to prevent indulgence became a sugary staple of the modern breakfast table.
