China’s Massive Medieval Treasure Fleet

Long before the European Age of Discovery, Admiral Zheng He commanded a massive Chinese fleet that visited Africa. His ships were so enormous that they dwarfed the vessels used by Columbus decades later.

Between 1405 and 1433, China launched seven spectacular maritime expeditions across the Indian Ocean. These missions used hundreds of treasure ships to establish trade and diplomacy from Southeast Asia to the coast of East Africa. It remains a fascinating historical "what if" because China suddenly ended these voyages and turned inward just as they were becoming a global naval power. These expeditions proved that China had the technology to dominate world trade long before Western powers.
