The Mathematical Foundation of Music

Most modern music is slightly out of tune. By relying on perfect mathematical ratios found in nature, early systems like Pythagorean tuning create harmonies that sound pure but actually prevent you from playing in every key.

This ancient method builds scales using perfect fifths based on the ratio of three to two. While these intervals sound incredibly clean to the human ear, they create a conflict when you try to close the circle of notes. Because nature and math do not perfectly align, musicians eventually had to sacrifice pure intervals to allow instruments to play in any key. This compromise created the modern tuning system we use today, which is technically imperfect but far more versatile.
