The forger, Konrad Kujau, managed to fool even a renowned historian who initially vouched for the documents' authenticity. When the fake journals were unveiled at a high-profile press conference, the expert famously flip-flopped on his opinion mid-event. Scientists later proved the fraud by identifying fluorescent fibers in the paper that did not exist during the Nazi era. This remains one of the most famous cautionary tales about the dangers of media rushing to publish without rigorous verification.
