The Giant Siberian Unicorn Once Existed
The legendary unicorn was likely based on a real, massive rhinoceros called Elasmotherium. These giants roamed the earth until at least 39,000 years ago, meaning early humans may have actually seen them.
This prehistoric beast grew to the size of a mammoth and sported a single, enormous horn on its forehead. While modern rhinos belong to a different family, Elasmotherium was a distinct relative that thrived across Eurasia for millions of years. It is fascinating to think that our ancestors lived alongside such a creature, possibly inspiring myths of horned beasts. Their survival into the late Pleistocene makes them one of the most incredible megafauna of our recent past.
