Medieval Maps Were Not For Navigation

Medieval world maps were never meant to help sailors find their way. These ornate diagrams were actually complex theological tools designed to teach history, morality, and biblical stories rather than geography.

Because these maps focused on spiritual truths, they often placed Jerusalem at the very center of the world. Europe, Asia, and Africa were arranged in a symbolic pattern rather than a realistic one. Explorers never used them for travel because they lacked the accurate coastlines needed for navigation. Instead, they served as visual encyclopedias for people living in the Middle Ages.
