Flowers That Kidnap Their Pollinators

Some plants use deceptive traps to temporarily kidnap insects for pollination. By forcing bugs to crawl through slippery tunnels or sticky nectar, these flowers guarantee a thorough dusting of pollen.

These plants create elaborate prisons using downward-pointing hairs or smooth surfaces that make escape impossible for a time. The insect is essentially held hostage until it has wandered enough to transfer pollen effectively. Once the plant is satisfied, it may release the captive or even change its shape to let the exhausted visitor leave. It is a brilliant, if slightly manipulative, evolutionary strategy for reproduction.
