The Short Life of Drop City

The Short Life of Drop City

Drop City was the world's first rural hippie commune. Founded in 1960, this experimental Colorado art project eventually dissolved into an abandoned ghost town less than two decades later.

This unique community began as a bold experiment in living off the land and repurposing discarded materials. Artists built iconic geodesic domes from scrap metal and old car parts to house their counterculture lifestyle. While it served as a major inspiration for future communes, its rapid rise and fall reflect the transient nature of the era. It remains a fascinating landmark of architectural and social history in the American West.
