The Frog-Faced River Predator

This rare giant turtle spends ninety-five percent of its life buried in the sand with only its eyes and nose poking out. It remains motionless for hours, waiting like a trap to ambush passing prey with a lightning-fast strike.

Because of its unusually flat, wide head and wide-set eyes, it earned the nickname frog-faced turtle. Unlike most turtles, it lacks a hard protective shell, opting instead for a soft, leathery skin that helps it remain undetected on riverbeds. Unfortunately, these creatures are now critically endangered across Southeast Asia. Their unique appearance and shy nature make them one of the most mysterious giants in freshwater habitats.
