The Valley That Named Human History

The Vezere Valley is so significant that it defines the very names we use for prehistoric time periods. It is here that early modern humans were first identified and officially named as Cro-Magnon.

This small region in France is essentially the global epicenter for Paleolithic research. Scientists discovered so much evidence of ancient life here that three major prehistoric eras—the Mousterian, Magdalenian, and Micoquien—were named after sites found in this valley. By studying these rock shelters and decorated caves, experts unlocked a massive part of our collective human origin story.
