The Ancient Symbol Before The Swastika

The fylfot is an ancient cross symbol that long predates modern history. It looks like a swastika with chopped-off arms, yet it served as a common decorative motif in medieval Anglo-Saxon art and craftsmanship.

Long before the twentieth century, this design appeared frequently on church vestments and stained glass windows across England. It was named fylfot, possibly meaning four-footed, as the shape resembles four feet meeting at a center point. While its geometry is very similar to the swastika, its historical roots are firmly planted in early European religious and folk traditions. Today, it remains a rare but significant find for historians studying pre-modern symbolic art.
