The Lethal Deception of Fireflies

Fireflies do not just glow to find romance. Some female beetles mimic the specific light patterns of other species to lure in unsuspecting males, only to catch and eat them as a meal.

While we see fireflies as peaceful sparks in the night, they can be surprisingly cutthroat hunters. This behavior, known as aggressive mimicry, allows certain predators to bypass the species barrier by speaking the secret language of a rival. Originally, this light evolved as a warning sign to signal that larvae tasted bitter to birds. Over time, the insects repurposed this signal for complex social interactions and, in some cases, for deadly traps.
