The Russian City That Never Existed
For decades, Zheleznogorsk was intentionally erased from all public maps. Known only as Krasnoyarsk-26, this secret nuclear city was a restricted zone hidden deep in the Siberian wilderness.
During the Cold War, the Soviet Union built several closed cities to develop atomic weapons away from prying eyes. Residents lived in a highly secure environment where they could not leave or even mention their location to outsiders. Even today, travelers need special permits to enter the town despite its public existence. It serves as a haunting reminder of how large-scale government secrets were once successfully kept from the global population.
