A One Man Orchestra of Rare Folk

Steven R. Smith uses the project Hala Strana to master obscure Eastern European folk music. He plays bizarre antique instruments like the hurdy-gurdy and optigan to recreate ancient sounds alone.

While many musicians rely on synthesizers, Smith builds his haunting soundscapes using physical artifacts from across the globe. He captures the essence of Hungarian, Bulgarian, and Albanian traditions by weaving together sounds from the bouzouki to the spike fiddle. Most of these complex arrangements are recorded solo, proving that one person can act as an entire folk ensemble. It is a dedicated effort to preserve fading musical histories through modern, independent production.
