The Kentucky Family With Blue Skin
For generations, a Kentucky family famously had bright blue skin due to a rare blood disorder. This condition was passed down through a recessive gene, turning their complexions indigo for over a century.
This blue coloring was caused by methemoglobinemia, a condition that prevents blood from carrying enough oxygen and turns it a chocolate-brown color. Because the blood was darker, it appeared blue through the skin. The trait thrived in the isolated Appalachian mountains where family members frequently married relatives. Eventually, the family discovered a simple medical treatment that turned their skin a normal pinkish hue.
