Digital Amnesia and Your Brain
The internet is literally changing what your brain chooses to remember. Because search engines act as an external hard drive, your mind stops storing facts it knows you can easily Google later.
This phenomenon is known as the Google effect or digital amnesia. Researchers found that when people are confident that information remains accessible online, they prioritize remembering where to find it rather than the content itself. Interestingly, this does not mean we are becoming less intelligent or losing our capacity to learn. Instead, our brains are simply adapting to a world where data is constantly available at our fingertips.
