The Short Life of Montenegro Kingdom

Although the Kingdom of Montenegro was a sovereign monarchy, its formal existence lasted only eight years before it vanished into a new union. Its royal government was eventually forced into exile during World War I.

Emerging in 1910, the kingdom became a casualty of the shifting borders following the Great War. While it was technically a constitutional monarchy, the king wielded near-total control over the country. After the war, a controversial assembly voted for unification with Serbia, effectively erasing the kingdom from the map. It took nearly nine decades for Montenegro to regain its independence as a sovereign nation in 2006.
