The Palace Rebuilt Under Communist Rule

Although Buda Castle was once the seat of Hungarian kings, its current form is a product of the mid-20th century. After near-total destruction in World War II, the site was reconstructed in a simplified style during the communist era.

This historic complex has stood since the 13th century, evolving from a medieval fortress into a grand Baroque palace. Its fate took a dark turn during the 1945 Siege of Budapest, which left the structure in ruins. Remarkably, the government later chose to restore the site rather than let it disappear. Today, instead of royal inhabitants, the halls serve the public by housing national galleries, libraries, and museums.
