The Ever-Changing Palaces of Minoan Crete

Minoan palaces were not static monuments, but living buildings in constant flux. Each site was remodeled so frequently over centuries that their layouts were continuously transformed.

Unlike modern buildings designed to last, these Bronze Age complexes were organic works in progress. The architects consistently added new wings, adjusted wall placements, and shifted room functions to suit evolving needs. Because of this, archaeologists often find several layers of history buried within a single site. This fluid approach to construction suggests that for the Minoans, a palace was an evolving process rather than a finished product.
