The Traveling Victorian Glass Palace

The Kibble Palace was originally built as a private conservatory for an eccentric inventor rather than a public park attraction. It actually spent its early years in a different location before being moved to the gardens on giant rollers.

John Kibble, an engineer and photographer, designed this massive iron and glass structure in the 1860s. He famously transported the entire building to its current home by placing it on iron rails and rolling it across the grounds. Today, the palace houses an impressive collection of tree ferns that date back to the Victorian era. It remains a rare surviving example of 19th-century engineering that prioritized both botanical utility and architectural wonder.
