The Hidden Scaffolding Holding Up Bridges

Buildings and bridges often rely on secret temporary skeletons called falsework to stay upright during construction. These hidden structures hold everything in place until the permanent materials are strong enough to support their own weight.

Without these invisible supports, many of our grandest structures would collapse before completion. When builders construct classic stone arches, they use a specific type of falsework called centering to keep the pieces perfectly aligned. Once the mortar hardens or the concrete cures, these supportive frames are simply removed. It is a fascinating reminder that many iconic landmarks were only possible because of a temporary structure no one ever gets to see.
