Elevators Are Actually High Speed Counterweights

Most elevators are not just boxes being pulled upward. They are massive counterweight systems where the cabin is balanced by a heavy weight, requiring surprisingly little energy to move.

Think of an elevator like a giant seesaw rather than a simple motorized pulley. A heavy counterweight hangs on the other side of the cable, which offsets most of the car's weight so the motor only needs to move the remaining difference. This ingenious design is why they are so energy efficient and safe. If the power ever cuts out, the elevator is naturally inclined to stay put or move slowly rather than plummeting.
