Atmospheric Satellites Staying Aloft for Weeks

Atmospheric satellites are essentially permanent drones that hover in the sky to act like orbital satellites. By staying in the upper atmosphere for months, they provide internet and observation services at a fraction of the cost of launching hardware into space.

These craft, also known as HAPS, use aerodynamic lift or buoyancy to stay stationary above a specific location. Because they operate much closer to the ground than space satellites, they can transmit high-speed data with significantly less delay. They are designed to fly above the weather and commercial flight paths, creating a bridge between ground infrastructure and space-based networks. Engineers view these as a game-changing solution for bringing connectivity to remote areas without the risks of rocket launches.
