The Lethal Elephant Foot of Chernobyl

The Lethal Elephant Foot of Chernobyl

Beneath the ruins of Chernobyl lies a deadly, melted mass nicknamed the Elephant Foot. This solidified mixture of radioactive fuel and concrete was so dangerously lethal that just minutes of exposure would kill a person.

This terrifying object formed when the reactor core melted down into a lava-like substance called corium. Even years after the accident, the mass emitted intense radiation that defied human entry. Scientists had to use long-distance cameras to study it because direct exposure would have been fatal. Today, it remains one of the most hazardous man-made materials ever discovered on our planet.
