Handel’s Messiah Was A Flop

Handel’s Messiah Was A Flop

Although it is now a global classic, Handel’s Messiah was not an immediate hit. The famous masterpiece actually saw a lukewarm public reception when it first debuted in 1742.

George Frideric Handel composed this towering work in just twenty-four days, yet its brilliance was not instantly recognized by everyone. It took time for the music to find its footing and eventually capture the hearts of audiences across the world. Today, the Hallelujah chorus is a cultural icon, but the work’s path to fame was surprisingly gradual. It is a great reminder that even the greatest art sometimes needs a little time to reach its true audience.
