The Invisible Empathy Gap
Humans consistently underestimate how much their physical or emotional state shifts their decision-making. When you are calm, you literally cannot accurately predict how you would behave under pressure or extreme temptation.
This phenomenon occurs because our brains struggle to simulate feelings we are not currently experiencing. If you are not hungry, you will find it nearly impossible to understand why someone else would choose unhealthy snacks. It essentially creates a blind spot where we judge others harshly because our own minds fail to recall our past states of distress. Recognizing this helps us become more compassionate toward those in situations we think we would handle better.
