The Hidden Skeleton Behind Every Home
Most modern buildings are actually just hollow skeletons held together by a framework. Unlike ancient structures built from solid stacks of stone or mud, homes today rely on hidden grids of wood or steel for their shape.
When you look at a wall, you are rarely seeing its true structure. Architects use framing to create a sturdy core, which allows for lighter materials like drywall and glass to define the space. This is a massive departure from traditional mass wall construction, where the walls themselves carried the weight of the roof. By separating the structural support from the outer walls, builders gained the freedom to design windows, open floor plans, and towering skyscrapers.
