Why Humans Struggle With Basic Logic

Even highly intelligent people fail the simple Wason selection task. Most individuals intuitively search for evidence that confirms a rule rather than looking for a single counterexample that could prove it false.

This logic puzzle reveals that the human brain is not naturally built for formal deduction. Instead of trying to disprove a hypothesis, we have a deep-seated bias toward confirmation. When the task is presented as an abstract math problem, fewer than ten percent of people solve it. However, when the rules are framed as social contracts or safety warnings, our performance improves dramatically because our brains are better at detecting cheaters than checking abstract facts.
