The Tragic Legacy of John Cazale
Actor John Cazale only starred in five feature films during his short life, but every single one of them was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Despite this unprecedented career success, he passed away before ever seeing his final masterpiece.
Cazale played Fredo Corleone in the Godfather series, establishing a reputation for brilliant, understated performances. In a rare feat, all five movies he appeared in—The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter—received Best Picture nominations. Sadly, he was battling terminal cancer during the filming of his last movie. His co-stars and crew were so dedicated to him that they rearranged the production schedule just to ensure he could complete his scenes.
