The Radical Self-Transformation Seminars of 1971

Werner Erhard created a cult-like sensation in the 1970s by locking participants in a room for two weekends. The goal was to force a sudden, life-altering epiphany through intense Zen-inspired psychological confrontation.

This training pushed people to stop trying to change their lives and instead change their fundamental experience of living. Participants were subjected to strict rules, including restricted bathroom breaks and verbal challenges from trainers. It became a cultural phenomenon, attracting thousands who sought enlightenment through this high-pressure atmosphere. Today, it remains a controversial example of how quickly group dynamics can reshape personal identity.
