Nikola Tesla built a massive 187-foot tower in New York not just for radio, but to transmit free wireless electricity through the Earth itself. It failed after his financier pulled support upon realizing the energy would be impossible to meter.

Tesla believed the entire planet could act as a giant conductor for power, allowing anyone with a receiver to tap into a global energy grid. He built the Wardenclyffe facility to prove that electricity could travel across the Atlantic without any wires at all. When he shifted his focus from simple messaging to universal power, J. P. Morgan withdrew funding to protect his own monopoly on electrical utilities. The site was eventually demolished for scrap metal, leaving behind a famous mystery of what might have been.
