A Musical Tour of Lost Art

Mussorgsky wrote this famous piano suite to honor a friend who passed away suddenly. Each movement musically illustrates a specific painting from a gallery exhibition, even though many of those original artworks are now lost to history.

After the architect Viktor Hartmann died at age 39, his grief-stricken friend Modest Mussorgsky organized a memorial exhibition of his designs and sketches. To capture the experience of walking through the gallery, Mussorgsky composed a recurring theme that acts as the listener walking between rooms. The music survives as a masterpiece, even though most of the specific artworks that inspired it have since vanished. This suite remains a unique bridge between the visual arts and classical soundscapes.
