The Arteries That Defy Oxygen Rules

The Arteries That Defy Oxygen Rules

While arteries usually carry oxygen-rich blood, some act in complete reverse. Pulmonary and umbilical arteries transport oxygen-depleted blood instead, showing our circulatory system is far less uniform than it seems.

We are taught that arteries carry fresh, oxygenated blood to the body, but this rule has surprising exceptions. Pulmonary arteries carry "used" blood to the lungs to be refreshed, while umbilical arteries move waste-filled blood to the placenta during pregnancy. These vital vessels are built with thick, multi-layered walls to handle the constant, high-pressure flow from the heart. It is a brilliant example of how biology adapts to serve the unique needs of different organs.
