London Station Built On A Cemetery

Marylebone Station was built directly over a massive burial ground. Engineers were forced to relocate thousands of human remains during construction to make way for the tracks.

When the Great Central Railway decided to expand into London in the 1890s, they had to carve through the St. Mary's Church graveyard. Thousands of bodies were exhumed and moved to make space for the terminal platforms. Today, most commuters pass through the station completely unaware that they are standing on former sacred ground. It remains the smallest of London's major railway termini, serving as a quiet contrast to its grander neighbors.
