South Africa's Modernized Cold War Tank

South Africa turned an aging British tank into a modern powerhouse. By stripping down the old Centurion and rebuilding it with homegrown tech, they created a machine that shares almost nothing with its original design.

Starting in the 1970s, South Africa faced international sanctions that made buying new military hardware impossible. Instead of giving up, they took the vintage Centurion tank and essentially turned it into a new vehicle. Every major component, from the engine and transmission to the gun and fire controls, was replaced with locally manufactured upgrades.
