Augusta National Was Once A Nursery

Before it became the home of the world-famous Masters Tournament, Augusta National Golf Club was a sprawling commercial plant nursery. The course is still divided into sections named after the specific trees and flowers that once grew there.

The club was founded on the site of Fruitland Nurseries, an exotic plant farm established in the 1850s. Designers intentionally kept the botanical legacy alive by naming every hole after a plant or shrub like Azalea, Magnolia, or Holly. Today, the vibrant blooms provide the iconic backdrop that makes the course instantly recognizable. This lush history is exactly why the tournament is synonymous with spectacular spring scenery.
