A Secret Language From The Middle Ages

In the 12th century, a German abbess invented her own private language complete with a custom 23-letter alphabet. This mysterious code was never meant to be spoken, appearing only as fragmented words tucked away in her religious manuscripts.

Hildegard of Bingen created this language, known as Lingua Ignota, to express deep mystical insights that standard Latin could not capture. While she designed unique symbols for every letter, the language lacks any formal grammatical rules. Scholars still debate whether she intended it as a form of divine communication or a purely creative, artistic exercise. It remains one of the earliest examples of a constructed language in recorded history.
