The Origin of the Name Jira

The popular project management tool Jira is actually named after the Japanese word Godzilla. Developers chose the nickname Gojira during early builds and eventually shortened it to the current name.

The software was originally created as an internal tool to help engineers track bugs and tasks. The team jokingly referred to the application as Gojira, playing off the iconic movie monster's name.
