The Suspended Roof of Yoyogi Stadium

Built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, this stadium features a massive roof suspended entirely by high-tension steel cables. It functions like a giant bridge rather than a traditional building.

Architect Kenzo Tange designed this marvel to look like a pair of enormous seashell halves rising from the ground. By using cables to hang the roof from two giant concrete masts, he eliminated the need for interior support columns. This clever design created an unobstructed view for thousands of spectators. It remains a legendary masterpiece that redefined how sports arenas are built.
