The Night The Frogs Declared War

In 1754, residents of a Connecticut town heard terrifying, human-like screams at night. Convinced they were under attack by a massive enemy force, the panicked settlers armed themselves for a battle that never happened.

The source of the terrifying cries was actually a massive congregation of bullfrogs fighting over a drying pond during a drought. The settlers spent the entire night firing muskets into the darkness, fearing an invasion of French soldiers or indigenous tribes. By morning, they discovered the battlefield was littered with nothing but dead frogs. To this day, the town still celebrates this bizarre historical misunderstanding.
