The Translucent Oilfish of Lake Baikal

The Baikal oilfish is so fatty that its body is almost entirely translucent. Composed of thirty percent oil, these fish are so fragile that they melt into a puddle of grease if left out in the sun.

Living deep within the freezing waters of Russia's Lake Baikal, these fish have evolved to be perfectly buoyant. Because they lack a swim bladder, their high lipid content is the only thing keeping them afloat in the crushing depths.
