The Bone-Eating Snot Flower Worm

The Osedax worm is a deep-sea creature that feasts on whale skeletons. Its scientific name translates literally to bone-eating snot flower, and it uses acid-secreting roots to dissolve and burrow into solid bone.

These tiny worms survive in the deep ocean by finding whale carcasses that sink to the seafloor. They anchor themselves into the bones using specialized root-like tissues that act like a drill. To penetrate the hard material, they produce acidic mucus that chemically breaks down the calcium.
