The Deep Sea Dumbo Octopus

Unlike other octopuses that zip through the water using jet propulsion, the Dumbo octopus glides gracefully using ear-like fins. This unique method helps it conserve precious energy in the frigid, extreme depths of the ocean.

Named for their resemblance to the famous cartoon elephant, these creatures live thousands of meters below the surface. Instead of hunting with quick bursts of speed, they drift along the seafloor looking for worms and small crustaceans. Their gelatinous bodies are perfectly adapted to withstand immense pressure that would crush most other animals. By relying on fins rather than jets, they move with a ghostly, quiet elegance that is truly rare among cephalopods.
