The All-Night Puppet Theater Ritual

The All-Night Puppet Theater Ritual

A traditional Wayang puppet show is a marathon performance lasting from midnight until dawn. The audience can watch from both sides of the backlit screen, seeing either the intricate puppets or their dancing shadows.

This Indonesian art form is led by a master artist known as a dalang, who serves as both a storyteller and a spiritual guide. Using a Gamelan orchestra to set the mood, the performance explores epic Hindu myths and local legends. Because the screen is translucent, viewers on the front side see the colorful puppets, while those behind see only the shadows. It is a deeply immersive cultural experience that connects the audience to ancient stories through the veil of light and dark.
