The Olympic Champion Who Swam Only Halfway

The Olympic Champion Who Swam Only Halfway

East German swimmer Sarina Hülsenbeck won an Olympic gold medal in 1980 despite not competing in the final race. She qualified her team during the preliminary heats but was benched before the medal-winning performance.

In many Olympic relay events, the rules allow teams to swap athletes between the qualifying rounds and the final. Because she participated in the preliminary round of the 4x100m medley relay, she was officially awarded a gold medal when her teammates finished first. It is a rare quirk of the Games where an athlete stands on the podium for a performance they watched from the sidelines. This rule ensures that every member of the squad receives credit for the collective effort.
